A South Korean diplomatic source said Monday that South Korean soccer player Son Joon-ho was arrested in China on suspicion of bribery.
The source told Reuters that Sun was detained last Friday.
Sun is an international player who plays for Chinese club Shandong Taishan, based in the eastern province of Shandong.
The Korean news agency Yonhap was the first to announce the news.
Sun is currently in the custody of security authorities in Liaoning, amid allegations that he tried to bribe a “non-government official,” according to an official from the South Korean Consulate General in Shenyang.
The official, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the case, said the consulate requested to meet Sun as soon as possible and contacted his family.
The diplomatic official did not reveal any additional details.
