A Leeds United fan was banned for life after he stormed the pitch, ran into the technical area and shoved Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe in the chest on Saturday.

Howe was pushed in the dying minutes of the thrilling 2-2 draw at Elland Road.

“Leeds United can confirm that following an incident in a league match against Newcastle United today, an individual has been arrested and given a life ban,” Leeds said on their website.

Howe said he did not remember much about the incident but had called for greater security at matches.

“I don’t remember much about what happened,” Howe said.

“But moments like this make you think… the safety of staff is paramount and we need to keep in mind what happened and learn from it,” he added.

The tie left Newcastle, who scored twice from two penalties by Callum Wilson, in third place with 66 points from 35 games, and on goal difference from Manchester United, fourth. Liverpool comes in fifth place with 62 points.
