Euro 2024 qualifiers .. Austria snatches a tie from Belgium
Austria snatched a valuable 1-1 draw for each team with its host Belgium in Group F, to end the country’s winning record in the European Championship “Euro 2024” qualifiers today, Saturday.
Austria raised its tally to 7 points from three matches in the lead, three points ahead of Belgium, who played two matches on the way to qualifying for the finals in Germany next year.
Michael Gregoric gave Austria the lead from close range, as his shot deflected the heel of Belgium’s Uriel Mangala into the goal in the 21st minute.
Romelu Lukaku, who took the armband in the absence of an injured Kevin De Bruyne, wasted a chance early in the second half before the Inter Milan striker equalized in the 61st minute.
Belgium’s winning record stands at 15 in a row in European Championship qualifiers since 2015.
The result comes in a disappointing start to new coach Domenico Tedesco’s career with Belgium before heading out to face Estonia on Tuesday.
Austria can maintain the lead when it hosts Sweden in Vienna on Tuesday as well, while Azerbaijan and Estonia each scored the first point in the qualifiers after their 1-1 draw in Baku.
