Morocco loses to South Africa in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers
Morocco lost to its host, South Africa, with two goals to one, in the match that brought them together today, as part of the qualifiers for the African Cup of Nations for football.
The two teams secured qualification for the finals in Ivory Coast in 2024, but South Africa advanced to the top of Group 11 and has seven points, one ahead of Morocco.
Morocco can regain the lead when it hosts Liberia at the end of the qualifiers next September.
South Africa advanced after a fatal error by Al-Wahda goalkeeper, Munir Al-Mohammadi, as Percy Tau’s shot fell from his hand into the goal after six minutes from the start.
And the hosts strengthened their advantage immediately after the break, when Libasa Zakeli followed his colleague Themba Zwane’s shot, which rebounded from the goalkeeper.
Hakim Ziyech pulled one back for Morocco with a superb shot into the far corner on the hour mark.
