Dortmund are on the cusp of the Bundesliga for the first time in 11 years
Sebastian Aller scored two goals to lead Borussia Dortmund to a 3-0 win over ten players at Augsburg and snatch the top spot in the German Football League today, Sunday, before the final round next week.
Aller opened the scoring in the 58th minute, then added the second goal six minutes from time to put Dortmund ahead of Bayern Munich, and Julian Brandt sealed the goals in stoppage time.
The team from the Ruhr Valley, who last won the title in 2012 with coach Juergen Klopp, have 70 points, two ahead of Bayern, who lost 3-1 at home to Razen Pal Sport Leipzig on Saturday.
In a one-sided first half, Dortmund hit 16 balls on goal, compared to one shot by Augsburg.
The post responded to an attempt by Dortmund defender Niklas Sule, before the landowner completed the match with ten players, after defender Felix Odoki was sent off in the 38th minute.
Emre Can hit the woodwork after the break as Dortmund continued to press, which finally paid off with Aller’s shot hitting the post and into the net.
Augsburg almost equalized, but goalkeeper Gregor Koppel intervened to save the visiting team from Ervin Cardona’s attempt from close range.
Aller, who missed much of the season with testicular cancer, sealed the win before Brandt made it 3-0.
Dortmund will celebrate the title if it defeats its guest, Mainz, next Saturday, regardless of the outcome of the match between Cologne and Bayern Munich, who dominated the title in the last ten seasons.
