The appointment of Lina Ghautma and Asif Khan as architects to design and develop two museums in Al-Ula

The Royal Commission for Al-Ula Governorate announced the appointment of Lina Goutma and Asif Khan as architects for two museums that will be implemented in Al-Ula Governorate.

The authority added that 15 new cultural facilities will be established, including museums, galleries and tourist attractions, and “Gautmeh” will work on designing the “Contemporary Art” museum, while Khan will develop the “Incense Road” museum.

The architects were selected through an international competition, consisting of the main stakeholders and specialists in architecture, landscapes and museology, supported by a technical committee headed by a member of the Board of Directors of the Royal Commission for Al-Ula Governorate, Dr. Khaled Azzam, the architect of the plan for Al-Ula’s journey through time.

“Lina Gautmeh” is considered one of the most prominent architects, as she has received many international awards. Her various works combine art, architecture and design. British in architecture with his works that merge history with future developments, highlighting his designs on the basis of taking into account the environment and the historical social context, and he is currently working on the renovation of the Barbican Center and the new London Museum.

The “Contemporary Art” museum will provide a creative journey that takes the visitor from the natural environment to the cultural oasis of Al-Ula. The museum will also allow a continuous interaction between art and nature to embody the uniqueness of the Al-Ula environment, while the “Incense Road” museum, which will be developed, will celebrate the cultural heritage of Al-Ula as a meeting place for caravans on the incense road. The museum will be developed in harmony with the legacy of Al-Ula, including the historic city of Al-Hajar as well as Dadan.

Both museums provide a unique gateway to the rich cultural offerings of Al-Ula, and they will be developed with a sustainability approach as a key component of the various projects of the Royal Commission for Al-Ula.

The Royal Commission’s announcement of choosing the architects for the two museums in Al-Ula comes with the celebration of International Museum Day, which falls on May 18 of each year, as the Commission aims to make Al-Ula the largest open museum in the world.
