Study: Being obese at this age increases the risk of dying from prostate cancer

A recent study, conducted by Lund University in Sweden, found that being overweight among males aged 17 to 29 increases the risk of dying from prostate cancer by almost a third.

The study indicated that obesity leads to higher concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), a hormone involved in cell growth and development, which scientists believe can cause disease.

The researchers analyzed data on more than 258,000 men in Sweden who were weighed at least three times between the ages of 17 and 60, from 1963 to 2019, and 23,000 participants were diagnosed with prostate cancer, and nearly 5,000 of them died after diagnosis.

In the same context, a researcher from Lund University in Sweden, Dr. Marisa da Silva, said that the results indicate that preventing weight gain in youth may reduce the risk of fatal prostate cancer.
